First Mile Wins Sustainability Initiative of the Year

First Mile, the GCP-backed recycling services firm, has won Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the 2023 Sustainability Awards, hosted by the Business Intelligence Group.

The award recognises the business’ dedication to creating a sustainable future through its work to introduce electric cargo bikes for recycling waste collection and consolidation. This comes as part of the business’ wider strategic plan to decarbonise its collection operations in support of its ‘Love the Environment’ ethos.

Each electric cargo bike matches the operational capacity of a 3.5-tonne small van-sized vehicle and saves 20 kg of CO2 emissions per day. With a single battery charge providing up to 25 miles of coverage, the bikes are perfect for the business’ urban operations.

Maria Jimenez, Chief Nominations Officer, Business Intelligence Group, said:

“Sustainability is more than initiative and now integral to most corporate cultures. We are so proud to reward and recognise all of our winners and finalists who have made it their mission to help protect our environment.”

Joe Kennedy, Investment Manager, GCP, said:

“The electric cargo bike initiative typifies First Mile’s approach to innovative decision-making that improves business operations whilst creating a positive environmental impact. We’re delighted for the team in receiving this recognition and we’re proud to be partnered with a business that is making a real difference whilst leading the charge on sustainability.”
